Chapter 13   -  Karelia

An hour later, he knocked at Elena’s door. “You’re cold to the bone,” she said, reaching to touch his cheek. “Come in here and warm yourself.” Elena shut the door and pushed a pile of old clothes up against the bottom of the doorframe to block the draft. Viktor shook the snow from his coat and boots and followed her to the stove. Vasha was sitting on the floor wrapped in a blanket. He seemed more aware of his surroundings than usual and even looked up at Viktor as he sat down next to him, a great improvement since the last visit. His face was as thin and pale as before, but his eyes were brighter and more alive.

“Bad day for flying, eh, little pilot,” said Viktor, as he put his arm around the boy. “Good day for a dogsled, though.”

Vasha looked at him and nodded, but said nothing. “This is for the both of you. It’s not much,” said Viktor, as he took the parcel from his pocket and unfolded the wax paper to show Elena the bread and beans. “I’m sure Vasha would be interested,” she said. “Go on, thank your father.” Vasha nodded again and ate the bread quickly, hungrily, using the last of it to gather up the beans.

“We’ve dispensed with table manners … for the time being,” she said, smiling at Viktor.

Elena took a teapot from the shelf and held it beneath the tap, which proceeded to buck and spurt water in all directions. “Damn thing,” she said under her breath. “Vitya, could I ask a favor while you’re here. There is a dresser in one of the empty apartments down the hall. Number 12. I’d like to get it before the Krapotkins find out. There’s not much they haven’t scavenged on this floor, I’m afraid.” Viktor had noticed the absence of some of his mother’s furniture and the splintered remains of a chair and some drawers piled next to the stove. “I’m not strong enough to move it,” she said.

This is the right blog for everyone who wants to undsretand this topic. You know so much its almost hard to argue with you (not that I really will need to…HaHa). You certainly put a brand new spin on a topic which has been written about for ages. Excellent stuff, just excellent!
